How can you let your playful side show with your kids? Or, how can you practice small ways of allowing physical manifestations of emotions without discouragement? This is specifically a more directive approach. I use this style with high support needs children including Autism, ADHD, PDA, very little kids, or with some executive dysfunction comcerns. Often after I use these techniques consistently for a few weeks, kids feel secure and know exactly what to expect. Self-confidence is boosted and kids ALWAYS say “I can play with slime here but never get to anywhere else!” I know this style may not be every child specialist’s cup of tea! One of my favorite experiences is when a kid who had a negative experience with a talk therapist comes to play therapy for the first time. I have literally had kids tell me this was way more fun than they thought it would be, that their last therapist just tried to talk to them, and most little ones ask if they will be coming back tomorrow.

Play therapy works, period. If not, I can decrease expectations on myself to maintain the relationship. I do explain the risk therapy poses to my individual clients. If one partner in a relationship seeks out support and begins changing and growing in their mental health, the other one usually will be left behind.

Fortunately, partners often see the benefit and become interested in learning themselves. However, if people don’t like or want to change, it can unbalance the relationship. This happens especially if one partner was using the other or benefiting from their silence/passivity.

I love “anger management” work with both adults and kids! Can you hear the difference in these examples? Even the phrase anger management is not my favorite. The first approach is an attempt to control a person’s emotions and behavior- to eliminate the responses we don’t want. The second approach is an attempt to care for the person- to increase our understanding of where their emotions are coming from and support healing.
